Apti Batalov is closed in conspiratorial flat by FSB officersOn April 13, 2000 a special group by FSB arrested "a brigade general", Maskhadov’ administration chief Apti Batalov in the sough-west of Shalinsky region. "Batalov was captured alone without the escort,- a representative of FSB RF said. Now at the territory of Chechnya there are several of such groups". FSB officers brought Batalov on Friday to Moscow and placed at the investigation isolation ward Lefortovo. In regard of him there were conducted essential investigative measures for the determination of his implication to criminal activity. On June 02, 2000 at 10 a.m. a man called to the editorial office of our newspaper (and then it proved that the same call was made to TV company NTV) who named himself as Apti Batalov. He said that on Thursday after the release by amnesty from SIZO "Lefortovo" he was captured again by FSB and brought to the flat, Bakuninskaya street. The ringer said that he was speaking by mobile telephone from the toilet room and by the way to Chechnya he would be killed by FSB officers. Journalists from "Segodnya" recorded the ringer words with dictaphone. House pointed by Batalov was located at Perevedenovsky pereulok. Window of flat No. 113 on the second story were latticed and cheese-clothed - everything was just the same as the ringer described. At the knock to the door a young man with bob, of the Caucasian appearance went out. Having seen the NTV video camera he receded immediately. In several minutes at the stairs appeared two more dark subjects with the smell of alcohol. "Who are you, why are you shooting?" Without getting the answers they unexpectedly began to rough up the journalists. It was unclear why Apti Batalov (if it was him) changed the investigation isolation ward "Lefortovo" into the makeshift prison at Perevedenovsky pereulok. At half past six in the evening a first official reaction appeared. FSB said that "because of numerous menaces to the address of Batalov and his family the Federal service of security granted ... a guard to Batalov". At 19.20 an UVD representative left from the porch and stated that indeed at the flat there was Apti Batalov and the situation "under the control".
